Biography
Justus Garweg studied and received his doctorate at the University of Hamburg. After a year in general medicine, he completed his specialist training as an ophthalmologist in 1989 and began his habilitation as a senior physician and university assistant. In 1991 he came to the Eye Clinic Department of the University of Bern as a senior physician specializing in retinology. There he completed his habilitation in 1998 with the award of the Venia legendi and was appointed titular professor in 2005.
His research activities focus on the diagnosis of intraocular inflammatory diseases as well as cell culture and cytotoxicity of intraocularly applied substances. He is also clinically focused in the field of general diseases with eye involvement and retinal diseases. Over the last 10 years, he has organized advanced training for ophthalmologists and established quality control standards in the field of vitreoretinal interventions. The current concept of the Bern Eye Clinic at the Lindenhof Hospital is based on these principles.
